IMBY - 2018

Can 'ugly' things ever be considered beautiful? And do we have the right to insist that only beautiful things are on show? This project is looking at unconventionally 'beautiful' structures. I painted a pylon and a power station onto semi-transparent curtains which then enabled a viewer to 'pollute' their own landscape - these objects whose services we depend on are often considered eyesores.

I painted the curtains by dipping string in Indian ink then attaching one end to my toe, and whilst holding the other end with my hand, I lay across the curtain and flicked the string - transferring the ink to the calico.

The curtains are packaged with instructions using the conventions of IKEA, but branded as 'IMBY', parodying 'NIMBY' (Not In My Backyard) - bringing 'unsightly' structures to the comfort of one's own home.
